National Liberty Museum Details
The Experience
Through imaginative interactive exhibits, the National Liberty Museum, adjacent to Independence National Historical Park, reminds visitors that those who labored for liberty only a few steps away meant for it to last forever. National and international heroes who strived for liberty, like the Abolitionists, Nelson Mandela and Raoul Wallenberg, have their stories vividly told.
One gallery is devoted to immigrants and the reasons that they came to America; another demonstrates peaceful and practical ways to resolve conflict. More than 100 pieces of contemporary glass art dot the museum; the highlight is Dale Chihuly’s 20-foot "Flame of Liberty." The unique combination of art, life-size dioramas and multi-media exhibits appeals to visitors of all ages.
History
The National Liberty Museum is an independent learning and exhibit center supported by visitors, community leaders and foundations interested in protecting America's heritage of freedom. The Museum opened its doors in January, 2000. Since that time it has welcomed over 110,000 visitors, including 500 students per week from the Northeast corridor and beyond.
Exhibits are regularly updated and now include a three story memorial to the Heroes of September 11 and a tribute to the astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia.
