The Experience
Mum Puppettheatre challenges audiences — adult and children alike — with innovative, original productions. Performed in an 80-seat black box theater in Old City Philadelphia, Mum’s productions truly are theater of the imagination. Most pieces feature specially designed puppets, but some do not.
Often performed without dialogue, Mum’s works demand that an audience sit up and pay attention. Reflecting the iconoclastic vision of founding artistic director Robert Smythe, Mum seeks theatergoers who expect the unexpected rather than a familiar roster of comedy, drama and musicals.
History
Founded in 1985 by Robert Smythe, Mum Puppettheatre originated as a touring company and was the first American theater company to perform in Romania after the 1991 revolution. Awards include three Citations for Excellence from the North American chapter of Union Internationale de la Marionnette and seven local Barrymore Awards.
