For the headquarters of the Second Bank of the United States, which was incorporated in 1816, architect William Strickland designed one of the first Greek Revival buildings in the country.
Modeled on the Parthenon, the building is actually constructed of brick and faced with marble. On the interior, a barrel-vaulted ceiling covers what was once the banking hall.
Visiting
The Bank is now open to the public as an art gallery, operated by the National Park Service as part of Independence National Historical Park. The gallery is open Wednesdays through Sundays and Admission is free. For more information, visit www.nps.gov/inde.
And even on days when the gallery is closed, it's worth the visit just to marvel at the massive Doric columns on the bank's facade.
