Outsider Tip
If you want to try camping on your own, but don't want to join a class, REI rents camping equipment. The Marlton store, located in New Jersey, also offers kayak rentals.
Looking for a quick class to get you started in one of the region's outdoor activities? REI, the popular outdoor retail store, is now offering a series of affordable, entry-level classes and one-day guided outings in hiking, cycling, kayaking, camping, outdoor photography and even geo-caching.
You'll spend an energizing day outdoors and learn enough to truly enjoy yourself. You'll even be finished in time to head into Center City Philadelphia for a night out on the town.
The year-round program is designed for anyone interested in learning a new activity or brushing up on old skills.
There are evening classes and weekend outings or trips. All evening classes have associated weekend day trips that put new skills to practical use, but anyone may take a class or outing independently from the other.
COME PREPARED
There is a fee for classes. REI can outfit you with necessary equipment. With the exception of a few intermediate level outings, none of the offerings have any prerequisites. Some trips are kid-friendly, but most cycling and paddling trips are offered to adults and teenager older than 14.
