The Experience
Located on one of Center City’s “little streets,” this charming gallery and store presents 13 group and solo shows each year. Often these shows attempt to explore the influence of new technologies and techniques on the field of printmaking. “The Digital Press,” for example, exhibited works by nine artists using creative digital printing technologies, while “Blurred Vision” peered at how contemporary photographers are incorporating blurring techniques into their work.
History
The Center was formed in 1915 as The Print Club to give those working in printmaking, which was still not widely regarded as an art form in the U.S., an opportunity to learn from each other. The Club changed its name in 1996 to reflect a greater effort to reach out to the general public. Since 1924, the Center has been staging an annual juried international competition, the oldest of its kind in the country. Throughout its long history, the Center has maintained a special interest in introducing the works of international artists working with prints and photography to Philadelphia’s residents and visitors.
